Fun art classes for absolute beginners
Minute Masterpiece
The classes are Tuesday at 7 PM (until 9-ish) at WineStyles and on alternating Saturdays (2nd and 4th Saturdays) from 4-6 PM. WineStyles is in The Avenue at Webb Gin in Snellville.
Costs are $25 per person, all materials included, and the students get to take their finished 16"x20" paintings home after class. Paintings are predetermined and taught step-by-step so that people who have never painted before can create a nice image in approximately 2 hours.

Support the Arts in Snellville
Last week, a few people gathered to talk about the possibility of creating a Snellville and/or South Gwinnett Arts Alliance.
From that meeting, the decision was made to engage a broader representation from the community.
The idea was discussed to schedule a meeting and invite all interested individuals.
The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 2:00 p.m.
Anyone interested in art and/or supporting art of most genres is invited, including theater, performance art, poetry, literature, painting, watercolor, painting, etc.

Local artist's work on exhibit at Grayson Library
The exhibit features twenty-seven paintings in oils, acrylics, watercolor and pastels.
The library is at Grayson New Hope Road (Highway 84) and Bennett Road in Grayson.
Diana also teaches painting and the work of some of her students will be featured at this same location later this year.

House Bill 264 (HB264) will move Georgia Council for the Arts to the Georgia Dept. of Economic Development and protect GCA's dollar for dollar, multi-year matching grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. This is widely considered to be a positive move for GCA as it acknowledges the multi-million dollar arts & cultural industry of Georgia as an economic engine.
The Senate passed HB264 and now it's up for vote in the House. Please contact your House Representative immediately to urge him or her to support HB264. Then encourage your friends to do the same.
HB73 has been attached as an amendment to HB264. This year, the focus of the HB73 is as a flexible economic development tool for local communities, focused on local option and local control. Atlanta Mayor, Kasim Reed expressed his support of the Bill in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, as has the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the the Tourism Industry. A coalition of cities, counties, and arts and cultural organizations, known as Georgia Communities for Growth, is pushing for a bill that would give communities unprecedented flexibility for a new revenue stream to fund Arts and Culture as well as other economic drivers.

Altered Book Competition
Gwinnett County Public Library will host an “Altered Book: Unbound Treasures” competition. Turn your old book into a piece of art.
Gwinnett County Public Library invites artists from Gwinnett County and the metro-Atlanta area to submit an Altered Book to any of its fifteen branches by April 9. Judging will take place in May.
Winning and honorable mention artwork will be displayed at The Hudgens Center for the Arts in June.
A free workshop to introduce altered book art techniques will be jointly sponsored by the Gwinnett County Library System and the Hudgens and held at the Hudgens on March 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
To reserve a seat in the workshop, RSVP by March 9 to info@thehudgens.org.

Minute Masterpiece Is About Art & Fun
Margaret Poplin has a unique art business called Minute Masterpiece, in which people with little or no art training are led through a step-by-step teaching process while having a fun night with friends.
All materials are provided for each participant to use. At the end of the night, they can go home with their very own acrylic painting. I took Margaret's class back in November.
I asked Margaret a few questions about her art life and how she got started on the teaching and entrepreneurial path.

The Lawrenceville Rubber Stamp & Paper Arts Festival is coming to the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds in early February. Featuring art, rubber stamping, scrap-booking/making memory books, greeting cards, and calligraphic arts.

Performing Arts Classes for ages 6-18
Forefront Arts is currently enrolling for spring semester classes in Acting, Improv, and Musical Theatre for ages 6-18. Classes are held at the Academy of Fine Arts at Johns Creek Presbyterian Church (10950 Bell Road, Johns Creek 30097).
Every class culminates in a performance for family and friends! Instructors are professional actors, singers and dancers with years of experience teaching kids and teens.
Classes start in January.

I have a dream of the arts in Snellville
At the end of a newspaper article about me it said, "She said she's hoping to be able to do more to promote the art community in Snellville in the coming years. "
I am hoping, but I think we'll all have to get ready to gear up for something more than just hoping. Hoping sort of sounds like sitting around with a "maybe" plan. It's pretty iffy.
When you think about Snellville, the arts are lacking. People want more art and music. The Snellville Tourism and Trade Association is picking things up, offering a Beatles tribute band concert on October 23rd.

Nakashima will speak about his art and the artistic process in a free lecture and reception. Nakashima is the William S. Morris Eminent Scholar in Art at Augusta State University. He is a painter and printmaker who has exhibited internationally and has lectured in the U.S. and Japan. Nakashima's works are in the permanent collections of over fifty galleries and museums including The Corcoran Gallery of Art,The Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Long Beach Museum of Art.
